Born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, after the private practice of corporate/commercial law and then serving as legal counsel for Revenue Canada Taxation, Customs, and Excise, Janice began her career in Indigenous law as Canadian Department of Justice in-house legal counsel for the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. Janice was also the first Canadian in-house counsel for an Indian Band.

Janice works on access to justice for Indigenous Peoples domestically and internationally. Her publications are read worldwide and she educates and empowers Peoples by providing strategic advice on current political, policy, legal and economic issues and objectives.

Janice defends traditional Indigenous people whose religious rights and freedoms are under threat and she wrote Gustafsen Lake: Under Siege, 1997, her hard-hitting look at Aboriginal affairs in Canada involving a socio-political and economic analysis. In the book Janice coined the phrase, "profit rights versus human rights."

A member of the Law Society of British Columbia from 1987 until 1997 and remaining called to the BC Bar, Janice joined the International Bar Association in 1992. Her interests include the IBA's Human Rights Institute, Indigenous Peoples, international human rights and humanitarian law, access to justice and the independence of the judicial system.

Janice has a solid reputation for honesty and integrity. Some Indigenous people call her 'Sheds the Light.' Janice provides enlightened understanding and lights the way forward with the aim of peaceful global relations.
